Go hard or go home?

I’ve just come back from an amazing holiday in the French Alps. I learnt to ski in a week. I haven’t achieved any level of finesse yet, but I can get from A to B on skis, which is terrifically exciting.

I pushed myself whilst skiing. I forced myself into the heavy boots even when my legs were aching. I turned up, on time, everyday to attend my lessons to learn more. The rewards for my consistency were huge and I started thinking about what else my body could achieve with a little push.


I’ve always veered on the gentle side of exercise, but increasingly, my method could be described as little and not often enough. I put all of the responsibility of my physical health on my own shoulders and I’m only just realising that it doesn’t have to be that way. You can have teachers or instructors to show you how it’s done and help correct your mistakes. You can have class mates that cheer you on when you’re own voice has gone silent. You can have external goals that you can achieve out loud, not just internal ones that you quietly celebrate alone.

Going from a complete novice to an adequate skier in one week wouldn’t have been possible with my instructor, Olivier. He was kind, but firm and pushed me forward when my natural instinct would’ve been to withdraw. The rush I felt from making noticeable progress day after day is a feeling I’m keen to repeat, and not just with skiing. I’m looking for another motivational teacher.

I know I’ve said previously that I didn’t see the reason for a gym membership, but I don’t think that’s the case anymore. I want to keep smashing fitness related goals. I’m done with trading lightly and failing with the softly softly approach. I want to see just how hard I can go and see exactly how capable I am. And for that to happen, I need to put my money where my mouth is.
