Why I’m in a recipe slump

I haven’t been very creative in the kitchen lately, but I’m still trying to work out if that’s an issue or not. Life itself has been very up and down lately, so I’m not surprised that my cooking has been out of whack.

I haven’t got the energy. On my bad days, I’m very reliant on Lawrence to make the evening meal, or I’m just heating up something simple like soup. Then on my good days, I don’t often want to spend hours in the kitchen, when I could be out and about and enjoying other activities.


I’m enjoying my old favourites. There’s nothing like a shock to the system to make you revert back to what you know. I’m loving dishes like spaghetti Bolognese, leek and bacon risottos and chilli con carne – things I’ve been making for years and could cook with my eyes closed. For awhile, I was becoming a bit hooked on chocolate bars, but that’s an old habit that I don’t want to resume.


The weather. It’s very difficult to try new things when you’re not quite sure what the weather is up to. I don’t want to buy salad ingredients that then feel out of place on a rainy day. I also don’t want to buy hearty ingredients and then it turns out to be a scorcher.


I’m lacking inspiration. I love to cook, I really do, as seen in my last post about cooking as therapy. I’m really enjoying poring over my recipe books and picking out new recipes to try, but when it comes to inventing my own, I’m definitely feeling lacklustre about it.

I’m saving money. With the hope of buying a flat in the future, I’m keeping a closer eye on the grocery budget so I can save a little extra here and there to put towards our home. I haven’t visited the whole foods shop in weeks!

It’s summer here right now, so when I’m in a food slump I just head into the garden and grab a few things I can eat uncooked or throw on the grill–anything to make a meal without firing up the stove. In rainy and cold weather, I’m always quick to open the freezer or browse my canning shelves for veg I stashed there a month prior. When I’m uninspired to cook something new or cook anything at all, I throw some spinach in a bowl and start adding fruit (fresh and dried), nuts, cheese and anything else that sounds good and top it off with my favorite basil sun-dried tomato dressing. I feel like I’m still creating by personalizing the salad, but I don’t come away feeling exhausted. On other days, I go straight for a fried egg on a slice of herby toast. I’ll add an layer of garlic spread, some bacon and top it off with crushed red pepper for a kick. It’s pretty, tasty and fun. 🙂

  3. During the school year I’m usually really busy and it makes it really difficult to motivate myself to cook. If I’m really uninspired I usually like to make simple cantonese tomato & egg with rice and blanched vegetables (which is super delicious); hummus and carrots; toast with avocado and egg; sweet potatoes; kimchi with rice and fried egg and soy sauce! Those were things I grew up eating!!

  4. I take time out when I’m in a slump and fall back on favourite and familiar everything: meals, movies, books, cosy jumper, places. In time the enthusiasm returns. It just takes a bit of time out.
